2012 Custom fully fillet brazed 853 Dave Yates

I wanted the frame to be as clean looking as possible & the theme for the build was as much UK made or at least stuff from UK companies

PS Yes I do know the brake hoses are a tad long, that's on the list of fettling!

PPS Yes I know I could have gone with Pace forks, but I didn't :P

Yumm me like the frame paint job. Only thing that doesnt work in my opinion are the tyres for some reason those 2 colour tyres look wrong to me on the silver rims.

Havent seen a Dave Yates in a while they used to be the ultimate frame once upon a time. Didnt even know he was still going.

Unique and signed by the artist! Funnily enough, the combination of tan tyrewalls, thin tubes and the blue/white paint give it a retro look to my eye - if I just glanced at it from across the road I'd think it was about ten years old and very well preserved.

  • Being old school and a steel frame fan this bike ticks every box for me. I really like it. I would like to know how you got to deciding on a 70 deg seat tube angle? Have you got long legs or thigh bones or something? Reason I am interested is I have been weighing up whether to save up for a custom frame myself as I seem to be made up of body parts from totally different people.

The geometry is loosely based on my '99 Orange Clockwork then tweaked for a 120mm fork

I'm pretty average in my proportions so no geometry changes in that respect

Dave likes to work from an existing bike a customer has, even though he has a fitting rig

Personally speaking it's well worth saving up for (or raping the credit card) a custom frame

Don't expect any change from £1100 at the least for a frame like this, mine has custom drop outs, custom paint & a fillet brazed BB shell all of which are at extra cost!

How do you find the tyres?(if you've had chance to test them)

    cheers!

Yeah i have a goatee, not going full beard as it's not blinglespeed!

Tyres are good in dry and damp conditions, as you'd expect not so good in gloop. They are quite thin so sharp rocks may give pinch flats, not had one yet though.

  • Got my splashbacks today, very very happy. Weight seems good and the tread pattern looks nice!

You managed to get this filthy yet? Needs a good dose of the brown stuff!

    That looks even better dirty!

What head angle is that, it looks pretty tight which makes it all look even more retro I think.

    Nice though, really nice.

hehe, yeah dirty or clean I'm dead chuffed with it

From the build spec list head angle 68.5° Seat angle 70

I got my angle app on the phone to check it, it's more like 69° though, I think it's the pics that make it look short at the front end

I have been thinking about this again: Can I ask what sort of wallet damage was involved and did you get much of a say in the design?

A basic custom 853 frame from Dave costs ~£1100

Mine has custom drop outs, fully billet brazed BB shell (lugged is std cost) & custom paintwork, all of which was at extra cost

From initial meeting to delivery was around 13 weeks

I had a fair bit of involvement with the frame design aided by Dave's vast knowledge
