Ribble Bikes Vs Boardman Road Team

Evening Gents (And Ladies),

Looking to get a new bike and use the allez as a winter bike. I have been looking at the Ribble range of bikes (an Aluminium frame with a tiagra groupo with a set of Mavic Cosmics) for just over £1000.

I understand at this price I could get a Boardman Road Team (For even cheaper with 10% NUS discount) and If I got it in the sale @809 it would only cost around £720.

The way I see it:

Ribble 7005 Superlite:
Mavic Cosmic Rims
Tiagra Groupset
Aluminium Frame
£1000

Boardman Road Team:
Mavic Aksium Wheelset
105 Groupset
Aluminium Frame
£720 (if bought in the sale)

The question is, am I being stupid in even considering the Ribble or does the higher spec wheelset and possibly a nicer frame constitute spending the extra?

Regards, Brad

I bought the Boardman in May - got to say that I love it. Absolute bargain at £720 (which is what I paid too thankfully!). Frame is very excellent and it regularly gets 'top buy' in reviews of <£1k bikes. If you've got a £1k budget, why don't you get the Boardman and upgrade the wheels straight away? Some great deals on likes of Merlin at the moment. :P

To be honest buddy, this was the option I was going to go for. As long as the frame is up to scratch the I don't mind. Do you know how often halfords have sales on their Boardman Range? Are they due to bring out a 2013 range or do they update every 2 years?

i was in yesterday looking at the team carbon and one shop said they can get them in 2 days and another shop said they were sold out in all sizes

they didn't seem to know what they were talking about though, were very vague with any questions i had and dropped a customers bike in front of me and a few other customers.

not the best impressions of halfords to be honest though the first branch i went to were a lot more helpful.

i asked about upcoming sales but the bloke said they weren't allowed to discount boardman bikes in sales.

The prices on Boardman Bikes are always fluctuating, so even when the Halfords sale isn't on, a Boardman Bike could be reduced so it could just be a case of waiting for the right one to come up.

Also, I'm not sure if I would get Halfords to build the bike or whether to take it home boxed and get it built by a local bike shop. The guy at my local Halford store is a bike buff though (Commuting on his bike, always fettling with it) so maybe I should give them a go...

If you could try the two bikes or at least sit on them that could help the decision making

BTW the Aksiums as a pair are 35g lighter than the Cosmics and AFAIK use the same hubs...with the Cosmics on an alloy frame you're going to have a fairly stiff ride...

If he's always fettling with it, he's probably doing something wrong :P

What size frame are you and how tall are you? I'm trying to gauge roughly what I will need as my first bike is a little too small for me now (54). I am 5ft 11" so I'm guessing I will need a 56 or "Large" Boardman?

6' on the nose for me, and the frame size if large. I was stuck between this and the medium, but i have long arms and the medium felt too small.

Ashton is a bit too far to travel for me (Sold car when went started Uni) so will just go into the Bury store and have a sit on a couple. Did you have any mechanical problems when built by them?

No, the guys at Ashton are spot on.

Had the usual creak from the BB30, but they sorted it without any problems (swapped it out) and its been fine since (6 weeks and 1000 miles)

Why aren't they just shipping them with new BB30s, or is it the fact that they don't all have this 'creak' as to why they aren't replacing them all?

    Unsure.

Mine was a Large, and my work colleague got a Medium on the same day - his was fine, mine creaked, dropped them both in and they changed them both to be on the safe side.

I think the issue is that they came out of the factory un-greased and as it is sealed its impossible to tell until it creaks (or doesn't)

I bought a carbon fi boardman about 2 1/2 months ago, it had £300 off in the sale. I then used my NUS discount 10%, NHS Discount 7.5% and topcasback so paid £795 for a bike with an rrp of £1300. Just noticed that my bike has now gone back up to full price £1300 but look out for offers on boardman bikes because the do reduce some.

Halfords are currently doing £40 off when spending £400 and £70 off when spending £700.
