Mechanical brakes

Hi there,
I have just joined the forum so go easy on me. I have just started competing in triathlons but also got into MTB too!
A question on mechanical brakes. I have bought a Ridgeback MX-4 as my entry bike and will be tinkering with it, new pedals, seat etc to bring it up to speed but I have made a bit of an error on the brakes.
They had a squeak from new so I deceided to WD40 them to stop said squeak however catostrophe!!! They do not stop now. the front brake is pretty useless for stopping now but the back isnt too bad. Do I need to get new pads discs etc or is it simply a case of using the correct solution/procedure to get them back in working order?
Thanks in advance
Aaron

The pads are dead! You must replace the pads, and clean the rotors with 100% alcohol or a bike specific cleaner. WD40 contains a light oil which will have contaminated the pads.0
