Just about to attempt first time servicing cup and cone hubs (RS10s) but wondering -
Do I need to get an axle vice ?
Do I need a pencil magnet to get the balls out?
On Shimano hubs do you have to take off the innermost dust seal that sits just over the bit of the hub where the balls sit (race?) I have read its hard to get them off and back on without damaging them?
Any advice gratefully received.

The innermost dust seal I am wondering about is called the seal ring - on the diagrams below; its part 8 on the front and 7 & 10 on the rear:

haven't got those wheels, but i've serviced other c&c shimano hubs
the only 'formal' tools i use are cone spanners
a syringe is handy for applying grease
i use a long tie-wrap to store the pieces i take off in order, then when it's time to put them back on the axle you have them the correct way around etc.
i find the seals come out easily, once the axle is out it's easy to get something in the hole to pop the seal out, use something like a bit of wooden dowel etc. that won't scratch/ding the seal edges
i use the handle of a broken plastic picnic knife to hook out any balls that don't just drop out, there's probably a posher way to do it, but it works well
there're lots of good pictures on this page showing the process...

Second time I did mine I left the plastic covers on and just fished out the ball bearings with a pair of forceps. Putting them back in is easy; squirt a load of grease into the bearing race (plastic syringe makes a cheap grease gun) and just stick each ball to the tip of a flat bladed screwdriver with a dollop of grease and manouvre it into place. Careful not to dislodge them when threading the axle back through!
No tools apart from cone spanners as far as I remember0 -
Fantastic - many thanks to you both sungod and keef66 - I shall embark on this job with confidence...
hopefully there will be no follow up post from me titled
Help how the f**k do you re-assemble cup and cone hubs!0
