Worn inner ring?

My chain is having trouble catching when shifting down to the inner ring at the front. The shift seems strong/smooth, but if I am in one of my higher (outer/smaller) gears at the back, the angle just seems to be too much and the chain doesn't lock onto the teeth, basically sitting between the 2 rings at the front so i lose all drive.
Chain and rear cassette are new, but chainset is not and the teeth are probably quite worn, so this must be the problem right? They are no "biting" the chain properly? Because no amount of loosening the low adjustment screw seems to fix it.
Its a 105 5600 compact double

inner ring teeth actually look good though. Big ring teeth are quite worn.

How many miles has the chainring done? IME they last for 10,000s of miles, so it may be more of a case of the front mech alignment?Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

Hard for me to say as i have bought it second hand and dont have that information. Looks like the big ring has done its fair share of work whilst the inner ring looks to have been rarely ridden. Having played a lot with FD mech alignment I'm pretty satisfied that its not the problem. Its very straight and the vertical gap to big ring is as small as can be. It shifted fine with the old chain that was on it before. As i said the shift motion also seems smooth and strong.
Seems almost as though the gap between the 2 rings is a fraction too wide for this new chain, which sounds crazy, but thats how it seems.0 -
Is it possible the inner ring is on backwards??0

oh my days, that makes sense - is there a way i could tell without actually flipping it and testing shifting??0

I think the ID stamps (model, no of teeth etc) should be on the same side of both rings. Struggling to work out if that would be the inside or the outside though. Off to Google some images...0

Outside I think. Although the images of Shimano inner rings suggest they are pretty flat, so mounting backwards wouldn't matter...0

Im gonna try and flip it. Its not flat and that will definitely bring it closer. Will report back.0

You bloody genius. The love i feel for you right now even outweighs the hatred i feel towards the person who put this thing together the first time round.
I am cycling London 2 Paris in 24 hours tomorrow and you just made my life a s""" load easier.0 -
Well that's cheered up an otherwise rather tedious Friday.
Good luck with the ride!0 -
Thanks!
Just have to know, is that something you've come across before, or was that a bolt of inspiration from the gods?0 -
Not encountered it personally but have read about it several times before on here. Then squirrelled the nugget of info away for future use. Glad to be of help0
