Why not 650 wheels?

After buying a 29er mtb and getting into arguments with others about the relative merits it made me think: Why don't road bikes come with 650 sized wheels? Lighter, stiffer.... The only argument I can see(apart from tradition and tyre accessibility) is increased rolling resistance..

they handle less well. MTB 26 inch wheels are then fitted with huge tyres, so effectively are as big as a 700 road wheel

Some do. Shorter riders sometimes use them. There is one in my local lub that does. Also some TT riders use them.

Not that common though and it's mostly a custom build if you do.
