Chainset replacement

It's a drawn out process, but finally looking at replacing the chainset on my Felt.

Current - Truvativ Isoflow Square taper 22/32/44
Potential replacement - Truvativ Isoflow Trekking Square taper 28/38/48

Questions;

Same BB for both?
Adjust front mech up the tube slightly to allow for extra ring size?
Extra 2/3 chain links on current length too?
Anything else I need to know, or other square taper chainset options?

should be fine.

why dont you just fit new rings? or is cheaper to get the whole crankset?

mech may struggle with 48 if it is not designed for 48.

Chainset is about £40 and one of the crank arms on my current set is fairly mullered, so might as well change it!

Current mech is a Deore. Any idea if compatible?

You might as well get a ht2 deore chainset. These can be had for around £50 and will be much better than the truvativ-stiffer, includes a longer lasting bb and possibly lighter too.

I do mostly road miles on my commute, and quite often 'top-out', so hoping for a bit more speed, and rarely use a lower gear too, so not fussed about losing the lower ratios. It would just add to the options.

Quite like the sealed square taper BB's and they don't mean that I'd need to reface the BB to fit the HT2 Deore set. Having said that I do really like the Deore...do you reckon the BB would last longer with the external bearings?

Thanks Nic, that was my thinking, so I get to keep the sealed BB and just upgrade the chainset.

Would you recommend changing the chain at the same time?

it depends on how worn it is.

but no as it will then mean a cassette is most likely to be needed.

Changed the cassette and chain about 200miles ago so shouldn't have stretched too much since then, but cycled all weathers since with the 'odd' lube :oops:

most likey better than a chain that is cleaned and lubed religiously then.

Just make sure you don't have clearance issues with bigger ring on the chainstay

It's a Deore front mech. Any idea if they are suitable and provide the clearance required?

I'm hoping that the fact that Deore do a 48tooth chainset, means that the Deore mech will be sufficient!

read the specs on Shimanos webby for the part number on the Mech. as the answer so far is Yes and No.

M531 suitable for 44 and 48t 8)

Sorry, I thought you were talking about a powerspline BB. Those don't last 5 minutes!

You know your stuff...still doable with a new BB but a couple of quid more than the Truvitiv chainset but UN55 BB's will last forever.

Didn't spot page 2, but thanks Nick. Wouldn't have cottoned on to that until it didn't fit!

If I'm looking for new chainset's, how do I know what axle it needs?

...also noticed the Alivio suggests only 7/8 speed? Mine is 9, so will it not work?
