    Welcome to BR!
check local bike shops for previous years components, ChainReactionCycles often has good deals on parts so check their bargain bin. And if you want a heavily discounted bike, check out the 'specials' page over at Pauls Cycles where you can find middle to upper end stuff at lower end budgets. You're in a mighty fine place for riding, so enjoy getting back into the sport!

Probably in the same situation as you. Its a false economy to buy new parts in my price range as they'd last 2 minutes.
I buy most things 2nd hand off here or similar sites like Pinkbike ebay etc. If you read the reviews you can usually get some good bargins

Often the cheaper parts are longer lasting than expensive ones, as you pay for less weight.
Shimano stuff like Alivio works fine, lasts well, just weighs a bit more than XT.

What're you looking for and at what budget?

How do? I'm also in South Yorks. There are loads of cheap options, MTB doesn't have to costs a fortune. First off, Decathlon in Sheffield have own brand bikes Rockrider, that get very good reviews. One of my bikes is a Rockrider 9.1 which is currently on sale at £699 (bargain for a full suss, and gets great reviews on here - so don't just take my owrd for it). They also do some cheaper hardtail bikes that are great for the money. Decathlons riding kit is also pretty good.

But, it kind of depends on where you're riding and your budget, and as abaove - what're you looking for?

Have a look to see what you're comfortable on, there's Fosters Cycles and J.E. James in Rotherham to try out bikes, they are a bit pricey though I find. I got this recently from Merlincycles, seems to do the job pretty well, ticks most boxes and I'm told will be good for upgrading in future. Good price as well, particularly for a new bike...............
