Gritty Clunky Gears

When in smallest chainring and two smallest sprockets (on a standard double) a weird gritty clunky noise has developed in the last couple of days. It sounds like the gear is still trying to change all the time. I'm usually not bad with gears and have tried basic adjustments with the barrell and all other gears still running relatively smoothly. Any ideas what the noise stems from and how I can erradicate it?

chain rubbing on the big ring trying to shift up. not really a combo you should be using.

as parts wear the angles that the chain leaves the rings changes. try looking at the chain when it is in the work stand and making load in the chain with the brake applied.
