I just upgraded my Tiagra compact chain set to a 105 which I got a cracking deal on. It is A 53/39 and I am now worried that I am going to struggle up some of the very steep hills I ride.

Can someone please advise me if I can change the inner chainring to a smaller size, and if so, what are the options please ?

Many thanks.

Why don't you try it for a few weeks first before worrying about it needlessly? You'll take a while to get used to it, sure, but you don't need to start looking into reworking it unless/until you're sure you need to.

What rear cassette do you run? Changing that might be easier in the first instance

You might be able to fit a 38 but nothing smaller. The reason you got a cracking deal is that shops are trying to shift standard doubles because most people want a compact...

If you have a 27 out back I don't expect you'll have much trouble unless you are heading for the alps. A new cassette would be cheaper than a new chainring.
