Is there a formula for working out if I require a longer chain?
I'm considering moving changing from24/32/42 to 28/38/48.
If not what should I look at/for,thanks.

if the old chain is the correct length, then yes you will need a longer chain due to the larger chainring

    how long?

there are various methods, i always follow the rear derailleur manufacturer's instructions for determining correct chain length

if it's shimano, go to http://techdocs.shimano.com and look up the document for your model of rd

similar process for other manufacturer's, it'll be on their website somewhere

Unless your chain is currently too long I'd say you'll definitely need a longer chain for that kind of jump.

So you may as well buy one and trim it to length according to your G/S manufacturer's reccommendations

Also new chain with new cassette means far less likely to have issues due to wear.
