Is there a formula for working out if I require a longer chain?
I'm considering moving changing from24/32/42 to 28/38/48.
If not what should I look at/for,thanks.

if the old chain is the correct length, then yes you will need a longer chain due to the larger chainring
how long?
there are various methods, i always follow the rear derailleur manufacturer's instructions for determining correct chain length
if it's shimano, go to http://techdocs.shimano.com and look up the document for your model of rd
similar process for other manufacturer's, it'll be on their website somewheremy bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny0 -
Unless your chain is currently too long I'd say you'll definitely need a longer chain for that kind of jump.
So you may as well buy one and trim it to length according to your G/S manufacturer's reccommendations0 -
Also new chain with new cassette means far less likely to have issues due to wear.Yellow is the new Black.0

He's on about a new triple chainset though!
Best have a new cassette too!0
