Shimano R550 rear cones?
Hi all,
Picked up a pair of these on fleabay recently to go on a ss pub/hack bike & after riding the thing round the block to check it was all tight & working I noticed a bit of a rumble from the rear hub - upon inspection is appears the cones on both sides are a bit pitted so i'm gonna replace them & the bearings for good measure.
Only problem is, I can't find the rear right cones anywhere (plenty of left hand side parts) - closest I found was a review on SJS cycles website from someone saying they had used a 3BH-0200 cone (for Sora FH3300 hub) for the same reason & it worked - anyone know if this is definitely the case or if there are any other similar wheels which share the same hubs?
Also - i've read the rear bearings should be 1/4" on the rear with 9 per side, anyone able to confirm this too?
Cheers!

If they are the same as all the other Shimano hubs I've ever looked at, you are correct about the bearings0

Normally you need to replace cones and balls and once you've gone through the odyssey and found them, you realise that the race is pitted too and the hub still grinds... then you proceed with copper antiseize or carbon paste instead of grease to clean the races up while you ride... then you strip it again, remove the antiseize and fit some grease, at which point... the hub still grinds...
You can tell my experience with low end cup and cone bearings is not the happiest...
Sealed bearings: I knock off the old ones with a punch and a hammer, I fit the new ones and press them in... 5 minutes and I am back on the road at the cost of 6 pounds
Now, which are the serviceable ones?left the forum March 20230 -
I have some WH-R550's as Winter wheels and have been riding them for several years rumbly.
Periodically they get gritty, so I strip them and rebuild, but within a couple of rides they're back to having play again.
The rims are now so scored and worn I might well just relegate them for the turbo this coming Winter
The freehub packed-up and I bought a NOS Tiagra 4400 hub, took the one off that - 1/3 price of the 550 hub body !
Certainly I also took the ball bearings, but I can't remember if I also took the cones...
Part numbers are different, but then they were for the freehub too

Haha - I know what you mean Ugo, actually i've still to properly examine the cups for any wear - couldn't be arsed to pull all the internals out last night as the footy was just starting if the cups are gone too i'll just grease it to the hilt & carry on regardless until it bursts into flames, then i'll get a big mallet & mash some sealed cartridge bearings in there instead...Moda Issimo

Andy - i'd thought of that too, might keep an eye on fleabay for cheap hubs to cannibalize - i'll probably order the Sora rhs cone from SJS whilst ordering the R550 left one, it's only a couple of quid... unless I discover the rest of the internals are shot!
Cheers
