Ultegra 9 speed shifters
I am looking at getting some of these to upgrade my current shifters. I am looking at the ST-6510 and was hoping someone might be able to shed some light for me.
My current Sora shifters appear to be a triple but I run a compact perfectly fine. Is this possible with all triple shifters and specifically the Ultegra ones I have mentioned? I have read that the ones mentions do work with both but wanted clarification. Is there anything I need to do or is t fit and away I go.
I am also looking to upgrade the rear mech to the latest Ultegra, I am sure this will be fine but not sure on the front mech. Calipers I have already done up to 105's.
Thanks in advance, good ones don't seem to come up very often either.

6500 shifters can be used for double or triple chainrings. I switched from a triple to double chainset on my old BMC. I left the 6503 front derailleur on even when using a double rather than buying a 6500 and it worked fine even with the wider gap between the plates.
A 6700 derailleur can be used on with any Shimano or SRAM 8/9/10 speed cassette. The indexing is in the STI, not in the derailleur.0 -
the Ultegra 6510 as you say will do double or triple. they are easily recognised by the black downshift paddles compared to grey on the older ones.
The latest 6700 rear mech will work fine as with the shifter with a compact. I know its what i used to run. ideally I would try and find a 5500 or 6500 frontmech but the triple should work fine with a compact

Thanks guys, appreciate your help.
Just need to find some in decent nick. Rode a friends bike earlier today (first time out over the weekend, bloody weather) and the shifters were really nice, i know they are a few years old but much more precise and accurate than my sora's, however my Sora's have and still work well.
Cheers

I picked up some used 6510's for £50 but they needed new name plates. These were very difficult to source and in the end I had to pay £10 each side as they only came with the top cap as well (not on their own) so budget for that when you look around as the name plates always seem to get a real battering (chrome rubs off etc) or be missing all together.
They do shift nice though compared to the Tiagra they replaced.
Also make sure they are the 6510 (its stamped on the black plastic body under the rubber hood) as they were a later version/mod of the 9 speed Ultegras to fix a rattly lever issue from the previous model.Yellow is the new Black.0 -
Hi guys,
I made a small mistake, the ones i have found at the moment are the 6501.
Do these suffer from the rattle? Or is everything as i need and they are good to go?
Cheers

Yes, they then brought out the 6510 to remedy this.Yellow is the new Black.0

They'll work, you can run double or triple with them.0
