Soak it or heavily spray it in the usual suspect release agents and leave it overnight.
Try flexing the chain both ways against itself.
If the chain has been joined too tight with a chain tool then try to use a chain link tool to only fractionally loosen the stiff links.0 -
It was fine when i rode it in the morning, on a ride later on it went after about 3 miles.
Whats the usual release agents ?.MTB- Cannondale SL2 2011

If it was ok this morning, it indicates (to me anyway) somethings possibly wrong, not just rust etc.
I'd look very very carefully at the side plates etc round the siezed link, just to make sure nothings twisted or broken.
Utimately if it doesnt free up, i suppose you could break the chain at that point and insert a quick link.0 -
WD40 or GT85 are the usual suspects. Try a liberal spray then wipe, or leaving overnight to penetrate would be ideal, and will hopefully show some improvement.
If you've been riding in the inclement weather then water may have got in and started the problems. When you rode it in the morning the water may have been driven out leaving the problem behind. Hopefully, spraying some penetrating spray into the chain should free it up again.0 -
I cleaned it with degreaser and a brush earlier and reoiled it.
Its not twistedMTB- Cannondale SL2 2011

A degreaser degreases, it may lubricate but it won't de-oxidise.
As the link works one way and not the other, get a couple of pairs of pliers and force the plates and pins to work in the direction they don't want to go. Practice it a few times and hopefully the joint will free up.
This appears as a small prolem proving to be a real irritation.0 -
I will try the over night degrease and if all fails ill get a new chain tomorrow.
This is the chain i have at the moment but if i want to get a different type how do i know what one to get .

Take it off, smash it with a hammer, throw it into next door's garden, buy a KMC in the CRC sale.
Go back into next door's garden, retrieve it, measure the correct length, smash it again with a bigger hammer for being impertinent, throw it back into next door's garden.

I'd recommend hanging the old and new chain over something and lining them up to get the measurement right. Saves the trip next door. You'll probably find your old one has stretched quite a bit so allow for that. I've had one that had stretched a complete link (yes the cassette was knackered also).
Do you have a chain splitter ?0 -
i got a new chain for my cycle surgery a sram ? £30 o well( i needed by tomorrow), seeing that it was the same make as the old one i removed lnks to make it the same lenght.
Problem is when on the large front chainset the chain twists and jumps down to the smaller one, any ideas.MTB- Cannondale SL2 2011

Is the joining link on properly ? Is it deffo the same length (sneak next door and retrieve it). When it jumps down are you cross chaining i.e. big ring to big ring ?
By the way I notice you have a sestriere, I ride a sestriere, 2006/7 model I think with the tiagra/sora mix. Love it. Its my commuter/tourer so it gets a lot more use than my carbon fibre focus cayo.0 -
Yeah its on both big rings, i have Campagnolo Xenon 9 speed Derailleurs front and back and i bought the bike of my mate of my mate for £60.MTB- Cannondale SL2 2011
