On both London to Paris rides I have gone with the champagne demi-bottles for the last few miles.
Note though, from experience I can tell you:
1) you need a Buff to increase the width and prevent excessive rattling. Should be OK but I didn't want to change having a cork fly up my jacksie whilst riding.
2) Open with 3 miles to go and pass around to other cyclists with about 1 1/2 miles to go. Champagne is an absolute b***er to drink on pave sections and a nightmare to clean out of handlebar computers and front brake calipers.
I have been known to use the cages on my hack/commuter to carry tinned veg/rice pudding/soup/etc. if my panniers get too full for the way home from the supermarket!
