This may make me sound like a complete eejit, but can cup and cone bearings be replaced with a cartridge on a Trek 1.5 - on any bike for that matter?

I seem to have to take the back wheel apart and clean and regrease the bearings more often than I'd like these days... ie every week. Any suggestions?

Cheers in advance...

    Can't be swapped I'm afraid :(

But know how you feel - I hate cup and cone, far too much faffing and servicing like you say and once the cup is pitted, its gone....

Cartridge bearings a way easier to keep running good and replace when needed.

It's my first thing to check when buying wheels.

Fulcrum 5 have cartridge and would be a nice but not too expensive upgrade:

If the rim is OK you could get it relaced with a new hub.

Don't take this wrong but if you "have to take the back.........every week." you are doing or have already done something wrong. Your post also begs the question of why
you feel you need to do this.

Hate to hijack the thread but what tools do you use to check the hub on a Trek 1.5, mine (a 2010 Compact) is grinding and I want to check the bearings, cup and cones. I realise I need a thin spanner of some sort but not sure what size or whether I need any other special tools.

    Cheers.

The thin spanners are called cone spanners and they come in a pair. You'll also need ordinary spanners. There should be enough exposed nut showing through the cassette to allow you to get the hub off. If not you'll need a chain whip and cassette removal tool to get the cassette off.
