Hi guys

My 08 Carbon Synapse has done just over 10k miles. Noticed a noise on the right hand pedal down stroke a couple of rides ago, which I've now traced to movement when the pedal threads into the crank. I've removed the pedal, greased and replaced but still there's movement. Obvious fear is that the aluminium insert in the crank arm (drive side) has come loose. I'm kind of planning to take it to LBS on Monday for them to look at, but has anyone on here successfully had a thread insert successfully re-bonded? Or am I looking at an expensive new BB30 chainset?

You can fit a steel helicoil insert to replace damage pedal threads - if your LBS can't do it, try Highpath Engineering.

Thanks Monty, I've been 'Googling' helicoil's. Hopefully my LBS can do it, they're owned by Tri-UK now who are pretty big so fingers crossed. I guess it depends how much the carbon around the insert has been damaged? I'm afraid I've done around 180km with it loose as I originally thought the noise I was getting was either a wheel bearing or the Speedplay peddle bearing itself:-o

You need to check if the metal insert in the crank arm is loose - has been known to happen with Si cranks made by FSA. Unless you can get a warranty replacement, there's nothing you else you can do except replace them.

Thanks again and already found they've got a bit of history. I'm half prepared for a big bill. These cranks are £480 retail now - FSA SLK I believe is the equivalent? Possibly will go for something SRAM but everything else on the bike is FSA or Shimano so didn't really want to. Shame Shimano don't do an Ultegra crank with BB30 as I've got one on my winter bike and it's really stiff and smooth shifting. I know you can get an adaptor but kind of defeats the point in having BB30 in the first place....
