Shimano brake compatibility
My rear brake callipers keep seizing, probably due to the persistent rain here. I've free'd them up but they don't spring apart properly so I think it's time for a swap.
The current callipers are sora whilst the levers are tiagra (4400). So can I use any shimano calliper brakes ?

Most Shimano road brakes have the same pull ratio but not all. I'm sure I read that some recent Ultegra (SL?) brakes have a different ratio, they'd still work but not as designed or as well. It'd be worth a visit to your local bike shop, I'm sure they have an old stock Shimano caliper lying around they'd do you a good deal on.http://www.strathspey.co.uk - Quality Binoculars at a Sensible Price.

All the new models(5700,6700, 7900) will be slightly different due to the routing of the cable but there'll be zero issue with previous models(4400,5600,6600 and 7800).
You'll pick up a set of mint Ultegra calipers(6600) on Ebay for £45, 105(5600) will be cheaper than that.0 -

Do they have to be Shimano? I fitted a pair of Tektro GSR750s (or whatever they are called - the carbon top end ones) to the fast summer trainer/commuter: down from £125 at Ribble to something like £50 - lighter than Ultegra and can't fault the braking at all (better than latest 105 brakes with matching levers and stadard pads). Pretty bling as well with Koolstop pads as standard.
They used to be stadard fitment to the top of the range Boardmans that ran Dura Ace as well.
I think that Tektro will have no problem with the older Shimano levers (I'm running mine with 7800 or 770 - one of the two - Dura Ace 10 speed with no problems at all)
Have a quick look around for different options - why buy off eBay when you can buy new from a service provider that won't give you any grief if they don't work/you don't like them in the flesh.
How about those Planet X ultralight jobs in their sale?0 -
Back on this subject again as my rear brakes seized again. As they are sora the simplest (and cheapest) solution is to just get another sora but I'm concerned they will seize also. Having said that they did last 8 years.
The obvious upgrade is tiagra but it says they should be used with later sti shifters for correct ratio. Will it really make a difference ? Then there are tektro as Yossie mentioned but they come in pairs and the front brakes are OK so don't need to change them.
So - sora will work but might get the same problem. Tiagra might not work properly and tektro wastes money unless I swap the front anyway.
Any suggestions ?0 -
Fettled it
Decided to have one last bash at lubing it so I took it off. It occurred to me whilst I was looking at it that I could maybe just loosen the centre bolt somehow so it wasn't so stiff. I was right. Loosened the knurled nut slightly and the Allen bolt likewise and it now springs back out. Brill. 8)0
