Changing a ss for a gs cage

Is it possible to change just the cage on a rear derailleur?

I currently have a long cage Tiagra mech on my bike, and a short cage DA mech sitting around doing nothing. Seems like it should be fairly straightforward to remove the cage from the Tiagra and attach it to the DA - anyone know of any problems/compatability issues with this?

Depends what size cassette you have. From memory, short cage rear mechs won't work with anything over 28t. I'm sure someone will correct me though!

Just a thought, but why change only the cage and have a DA mech sitting doing nothing?

I have never done this with different models of mech but as long as the pivot bolt and spring mount are the same I see no problems. Easy enough to just try it out for the hell of it anyways.

Because he wants to use the DA mech - ie put the Tiagra cage on the DA mech as a partial upgrade. The whole point is to avoid the DA mech sitting doing nothing which it has to do as the cage isn't long enough.
    Faster than a tent.......
