Axle locked solid on my disc wheel - what's happened ?

Got a problem with my disc - the axle has locked sold.
It's a G-Force Xtreme, not done much mileage

Any ideas what's hppened and how to fix please ?

At the start of the club 10 last week, as I was pushed-off, the transmission seemed to slip a couple of times - felt like the olden days with screw-on freewheels where you'd put them on hand-tight and then when you rode them, the first couple of pedal strokes tightened the freewheel onto the hub.

Anyway, after a couple of pedal turns it all settled down...until I got to the turn roundabout, when as I stopped pedalling to freewheel round the roundabout, all sorts of crashing and mashing as the chain and derailleur tied themselves in knots and the rear wheel locked-up : on stopping to investigate and untangle it all, found I had no freewheeling at all from the rear hub.

Rode back to the start, pedalling all the way but obvious that there was rather more resistance than there should be.

Now when I investigate, the axle has locked solid, won't rotate at all.
I can't rotate the freehub either way, even using a chainwhip.
It might as well be a fixed hub.

Here's the hub from both sides
- is it actually something fairly generic like a Formula or Token ?

I've undone the grub screws but can't work-out what I do next - there's no nut on the ends of the axles, no allen fitting inside it : do I just undo the grub screws and drift it through from one side to the other or something ? If so, from which side ?

Any ideas ?

thanks

next you go and get a shimano hub fitted wheel built with propper materials.

Undo the grub screws and pull the end caps off these can be stuck sometimes as the grub screw digs into the axle and leaves a swarf, then the freehub body should pull off { i'm asuming it is a sealed cartridge bearing hub} you need to take it apart as it sounds like a bearing has broken up or the pawls and spring have given up causing the jam.

    Thanks for the response.
Yes, that makes sense, I'll have a go at that.
I guess if it is a bearing then thet's easy enough to replace, and if it is a generic hub from Token or Formula or someone then a spare freehub is possible if I can just identify what it is.

Not the bearing, no, it's the freehub... a pawl has broken and got stuck it seems... you need to remove the freehub and get a new comptible one.

  • I could be wrong, but that looks like a Grimeca hub.. if so, then yes, undo the grub screw, and you should be able to get the end cap off.. .then lightly tap the axle to spit it out the other side. If it's the freehub itself.. Grimeca parts aren't hard to come by. I was able to repair mine without much drama, but mine had >10k miles on it when I'd needed to.
