Barrel adjuster downtube thread issue

Riveting stuff this I'm sure but it has come to my attention that the thread on the front mech downtube barrel adjuster boss on SWMBO's alu road bike (nothing expensive but works) seems to be non-existent. Bought the bike second hand and had never had cause to adjust it and just spotted it. Upshot, barrel adjuster totally non-functioning and barrel adjuster housing liable to pop out of the boss...

Is this a big issue and can it be repaired? Just looks like the thread has somehow been rubbed (??) smooth? Are there in-line barrel adjusters you can get (or am I imagining that) and if so any recommendations?

TIA anyway, cheers.

Not sure what's happened there, but I know that one of my bikes has in line adjusters that were put in about 3 inches out of the brifters, so they definitely exist.

Had a quick search - can't find the exact same ones I've got, but did find these.

The m-part style ones don't work too well in my experience. Sometimes they're fine, but fairly often they'll screw themselves back in making themselves completely pointless.

The jagwire J-2 work okay, but if you've got old style shimano shifters (exposed gear cables) then I think ritchey make some ones that sit between the cable outer and the shifter, these work really well when you can use them.

However, with a front mech, if you pre-stretch the cable (do it up tight and then pull the cable against the high limit screw on the mech) and then set the tension precisely you shouldn't have many issues.

Interesting, cheers. Any thoughts on whether the stripped thread can be rescued?

I doubt you'll be able to repair the stripped thread, the position on the frame makes it a PITA to do anything - I have a frame that's suffered from stripped adjusters for 10 years and think that inline adjusters are just something else to go wrong IME. Installed and set-up correctly, your gears rarely need to be adjusted.
