Hi all,

I am looking for a bike for my brother come the new term in September. His budget is around the £200 mark, is there any bike that you guys can recommend looking at?

Realistically he knows its not going to be an all singing, all dancing bike but is after somethimng that will be used to commute to and from University and potter around town.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

i think the halfords TDF is £299 and somewhere on here i saw a 15% off voucher code meaning it would be about £255? Be quick though as the voucher may expire soon.

With that sort of budget then second hand is the only option really. Keep an eye out on the classifieds section or ebay etc.

At that budget, and with what he's going to use it for I would go for a hybrid rather than a full road bike, e.g. a new Dawes Discovery:

For that money I'd buy (or build up) a used fixed gear/SS. Minimal maintenance and better suited to leaving outside in all weather than other options. Try to get something that will take proper mudguards (although Cruds etc. are ok) and DO NOT buy one of those Create/Unipack abominations as they're awful. Maybe a Pompino or similar?

If you buy new for that money you'll get something really, really basic that won't be half as much fun.

Wouldn't you need to have a NUS student card when you go to the shop to pay for the bike?
