Hello all, I am in the process of trying to fit Blackstorm carbon forks to my Carrera TDF bike. The problem i have is that when the forks are fitted there is an amount of play in the fork. To the extent where i can shake them quite wildly by moving the bars. Is there something missing from my install???? someone mentioned crown race????? The only thing different between the original forks and the new ones is a small black r ing at the base of the old fork.

Please someone help as it is doing my head in now lol.
Thank You all
Dave

Step away form the bike and take it to your LBS now.

    This probably why.

The black ring needs swapping over this sits in to the head race and it's what it all clamps together with. It will be a tight fit but should prise off just be gentle and don't bend it outta shape. And if new forks have carbon steerer be sure to use a bung rather than a star nut at the top to hold stem top bolt.

I might be able to leave behind a knackered old pair of Northwaves and half a set of handlebars.

Steerer is alloy, so the star nut is fine. I had a strong idea the ring needs to be swapped, have tried prising it off with a tiny flat screwdriver but it feels like somebody used 2 part glue to hold it on lol

Get a small toffee hammer and the flat blade screwdriver and tap in a circle around the base of the little metal ring.

It shouldn't be glued on, it will be merely pressed on tight as.

If you tap round in a circle then it will slowly come off in a uniform way, rather than only on one side.

Tap gently so you don't damage it.

Once you have it off, transfer ot across, slide it down as far as poss then either ask the LBS to press it into place or get a soft drift and tape it down again.

Slap loads of grease on, re-assemble. Make sure you put the bearings in the right way round.

Worst comes to the worst, just get a new one from the shop (couple of Pounds should do it) and fit that.

    HTH

Have just been to lbs, could not remove the old one. Also said they do not sell spares as they come as a complete headset. Is it my best option to replace the headset.
Frame is a Carrera TDF from halford - even they cant fix it or tell me what headset is fitted??????
Headset is semi-integrated i do know that much
Forks are Blackstorm from Ribble cycles
diameter of steerer is 25.8mm at top and 31mm at the bottom due to a metal piece at the bottom.

Can someone please recommend what i need as I am stressed. Cant believe the lbs cant remove it.

Hi just fitted deda blackrain forks to a Carrera virtuouso ltd
The ride is loads better + with new r501 wheels .
I've got to say I've noticed the forks change more than the wheels .
One thing though you will have to change the front brake to 57 mm drop .
