Bottom Bracket issues

Hey folks. I'm real new to bike maintenance and was wondering if anyone would be willing to help me out a bit. My bottom bracket's gone out, im not sure if it's the bracket itself or if the threading inside the frame has stripped, but either way, i'd like to go in myself and try to fix it. I'll probably look up a couple tutorials for my specific situation, but I was wondering if anyone could steer me in the right direction for tools for this job, specifically sizes of wrenches and whatnot I should be looking for. I just really have no idea and would like to start somewhere. I have an 80's Gitane and the bracket is square taper. Any help would be really really appreciated. Summer's around the corner and i'm dying to get back out on the road. Thanks and hope to hear from you soon!
