just bought a new shimano rs10 rear wheel and put the sram pg950 9 speed casette from my old wheel onto the hub, the pin which holds the sprockets in place has fallen out so now when the lockring is tight all the first 8 sprockets, move backwards and forwards slightly, this has never happened before with any of my sram casettes, do i need a special tool to tighten the pin

Try changing the spacer behind the cassette for a bigger one to take the play out - you can get 1/2 mm and 1 mm I believe.

Not sure about the pin though - can someone else help?

I don't think the pin serves any other purpose than keeping the sprockets together. Sounds like you just need a spacer.
    More problems but still living....
