Lightweight bike lock?

When I first got my bike I got a £50 u-lock to make sure it never got nicked, but I've found it to be too heavy and cumbersome to use in practice. Most of my riding is in rural areas where I only need something lightweight to stop an opportunistic thief running off with the bike when I'm in a shop.

At the moment I'm carrying a £5 cable lock from Ebay but this involves a really time consuming wrapping around the headtube to stop it flapping about as I ride.

I need something that's small and light but easy to fit to the frame.

Any ideas?

I use one similar to this:

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/lifeventure-mini-cable-lock/

They come in different qualities/brands/lengths/thickness of cable, fit into jersey pocket, I use mine on a train just to stop the opportunist hopping off with my bike. Mrs T also uses hers as an accessory lock to attach the helmet to her bike when the bike is locked with a more secure lock at the shops, to save carrying the helmet around. Useful item to have as well as other locks.
my isetta is a 300cc bike

Wiggle also sell an Abus lock of similar design but for double the price. Not sure if this is worth the extra cash??

I ordered myself one of these. They arent as small but lightweight and shouldnt be too hard to carry around.
Like the item discription says: ''perfect for locking your bike up whilst popping into a shop or nipping to the gents/ladies. ''

  • I came across this idea on a MTB forum, cant remember which one. Very handy when you just want to run into a shop in the Sticks.
