Of Hybrids and Road Bikes

Hey cycle peeps;

My question is can a hybrid do a passable imperession of a either a road bike or a mountain bike with a few choice modifications ?
I've been riding a jalopy old mountain bike for about 5 weeks, doing about 10 miles a day, mostly on roads but the roads are so bad some are really just a massive mess of broken tarmac and potholes, and up some steep gradiants in places. I really fancy a road bike but I'm not overly bothered about top speed or distance.

So, for example, could I chuck some skinny tyres and drop handlebars on and make it into a passable roadbike, then replace the straight bars and some knobblies and make it into a passable mountain bike ?
A Friend has a Specialised Hardrock which I had a quick go on and felt it too chunky (not tall, just wide) and I really didn't like the suspension on the forks.

My initial budget is fairly low at ~£400, more than the £200 I had originally imagined lol.

edit: oh I did a search but only found a brief Q&A in the FAQ here.

    You need a cross bike then you can get a spare set of wheels with proper road tyres.

    This is what my Chris Boardman Hybrid started out like although mine is a 2008

    A set of drops full mudguards now instead of crud catchers, Shimano sora gear /brake levers Shimano rear mech and this week I removed the disc bakes so I could fit Mavic CXP 22 wheels and cantilever brales. I haven't got a picture of the latest mod but this is just after I fitted the drops. It does a pretty good impression of a road bike wouldn't be too good as a MTB as big tyres wouldn't fit the frame behind the BB as it's only wide enough for a 35mm tyre. It keeps up with road bikes ok though. I used it as my winter hack and will keep to use when the roads are crappy or wet.

    putting cross tyres and drops on the hybrid might look ok depending on what the frame looks like...

    slam the stem, and maybe get a longer one and it might do quite a good impersonation of a cross bike.
