Shimano 105 Shifters Ferrule/Cable Placement

Why do Shimano 105 (also Ultegra/Dura Ace) have two different channels for the placement of ferrule and cables, as shown below? Just curious.

    So you can choose whether to route both cables round the front of the bars or one front, one rear.
