Hello all. I'm thinking about treating myself to a giant defy 1...I'm just a lttle over 5'7"..the giant website suggests i go for a small..Lbs advises a medium(they have one in stock)..the problem is that i had a specialised secteur in a medium and thought that i was stretched a bit..Anyone out there got a defy and could you give me some advice as to the correct size..cheers

    whichever fits best?

compare the two, and pick the one that fits and feels right.

No other way to do it -> i'm 6ft and ride a M/L defy 1.. but other people my height ride a L -> it varies between individuals.

Good choice of bike though!

    Hi,
I have the same bike and am same height and fit a medium best. However, I would also recommend you try both sizes as previously advised as the feel is down to the individual.

Best to get a ride on both mate. I'm 5' 7" on a Defy too. I have longer legs than Torso and the Small felt perfect.

I managed to try both medium and small in both the Defy and the TCR, so I got a good idea of the fit and style before I purchased. I really wanted the TCR on looks alone but after a ride I could say with confidence it wasnt for me :(

I'm 5'8" with long legs and have the medium but feel that the top tube is too long as my saddle is all the way forward and I still slip forward on it. It was ex-demo and felt ok on the test ride but long term it has become a bit of a nuisance. Small would probably have been better.

Hi..Thanks for replying..I couldnt ask a favour..could you please measure the stem length.. I'm thinking that if i go for the medium i may be able to play around with a shorter stem ..cheers
  • i've found the sizing tricky too. As I currently have a hybrid I have found it difficult to know how the bike should feel. I am just under 5'10" and everything I an find about the size says that a Medium is right. Giant's website pretty much says the even people who are 5'11" should be on a medium.

I tried a Medium and it felt cramped.

I tried a M/L and it felt much more comfortable. Is this because it felt more like my hybrid, who knows?

I am unsure whether I should follow the Giant website and get a medium... as in time I will adjust to the different position.

    Any thoughts?

You could get rid of some spacers on the steerer? this will lengthen the cockpit as well as giving your arms more downward reach.

as well as swapping the stem for a slightly longer one.

ask the shop to do this so you can make sure a M will fit. -> and if it doesn't then get the M/L. Its almost quite misleading sitting on a bike in a shop, because it will be in its 'default' configuration, and dropping the stem a bit can make the difference between a cramped bike and a comfortable bike.

Sorry, only just caught up with this so didn't see the request for measuring stem length. I'll measure it tonight and post back.

edit. I just had a look at the Giant parts site and stems come in the following lengths...
    60mm, 70mm, 80mm, 90mm, 100mm, 110mm & 120mm lengths

I'll still report mine when I get in - I didn't get a choice so there may be a fixed length for each frame size when bought.

My stock stem on a medium is 100mm. Nearly forgot and woke up in a panic this morning!

I would go for a small with a longer stem rather than a medium with a shorter stem.
