I actually want to use these on a road bike and then a mtb as it suits. However which one am I better off getting. I think the difference is around a fiver

The difference is the 530 has a platform like the XT trail pedals and the 520 doesn't. I just think the platform lets you get away with a softer soled shoe. Others might have other opinions.

I use the 520 on my road bike. The trail platform is useful off road where you might want to ride unclipped in if you need to pop out a foot, but once clipped in, the difference is minimal. The cost/weight saving of the 520s being the advantage I would say.

Thanks, are the 530s easier to clip in and off, or is it all rather academic?

No difference in use as far as I can tell.

Yes, Shimano pedals come with cleats - use them, should be SH-51.
