How do I find out what chain I have?

I'm planning to buy a chin tool and some spare links in case of a snap. The range of spare links available is enormous.

How do I establish which of these are the ones I need? Is it as simple as reading the code on the chain?

  • KMC certainly have the code stamped on them - don't know about other makes as I have only ever had KMCs. I would suggest you copy whatever is written on the chain then google it - I bet that will bring up the manufacturer and the you can find the correct links.

All you need to know is the number of gears at the back (e.g. 10 speed, 9 speed etc) and the compatibility of your kit (i.e. Campag or Shimano/SRAM). Most of the quick links are interchangeable as long as you get these bits right.
