Specialized Secteur - gear cable routing "cross over".....

Hi,

just got a Secteur Sport (new mail order) and running over it I'm stumped by the routing of the gear cables. They cross over under the down tube and are in contact with each other. Surely this can't be right? I contacted the store and asked and was told that's how Spec' set them up as it makes shifting smoother. To my eye, the gear outers are routed to the "wrong" cable stops on the down tube. If I move them they will have a tighter arc but not that much (imho). The front mech cable also seems to take the worst route into the plastic cable guide on the BB......... can anyone advise?

Thanks and regards, Mark

Crossing under the down tube is a common setup - it reduces the arc of the outers so helps reduce friction. The inners touch but are not under tension against each other. The friction is minimal and nothing in comparison of the friction within the cables themselves.

its an old idea that dates way back, seems to have been revived a bit with the abvent of under tape cable routes.

And I believe it's technical name is called a "California Cross" On the Sectuer I think it works better because it stops the cables rubbing on the frame as much.

  • My Secteur Elite (2011) is exactly the same and was bought from a Spesh Concept Store and just about every road bike in the shop was set up the same way = enjoy, ride and forget about it :D
