Should there be 'play' in SPD-SL pedals

Hi all,

I am trying to isolate a click noise and feeling that is always coming through my right foot.

Thought it might be pedal related (have 105 5700 SPD-SL with ~ 2000 miles on)

I tried to ride with the pedals disengaged and upside down but this made so much other noise and such strange cadence that I couldnt hear anything!

When off the bike the pedals feel smooth to rotated by hand, if I wiggle the pedal body there is ~ 1mm of play on both pedals between body and axle. Do the pedals need an overhaul???

Thanks
Tim

  • Sounds like you could get away with just tightening up the bearing cones a bit to remove the play. If there's any roughness then that would justify overhauling the bearings completely.

    Thanks - I'll have a go.

Is there a how to on this? It looks like I might need the shimano special tool for the plastic nut thing on the axle.
