Looking at purchasing my first modern road bike on a budget up to £1000. Considering a new Ribble special edition with full Tiagra for £679, but like the look of the Bianchi via Nirone veloce 2011 in Celeste on offer at £950 and have been offered a very good condition 2009 Trek 1.9 kitted out with Ultegra for £800 in a perfect size. I know this bike cost £1200 in 2009 and has only done 1000 miles. My heads spinning round and round trying to make a decision. Anyone got any views. I'm no expert.

If the Trek is a private sale, I would say that £800 for a 2009 bike (even with a decent groupset in Ultegra) is a bit overpriced IMO. If it's from a shop then you might expect to pay that sort of figure.

Via Nirones do look pretty smart and I have always found Veloce to function absolutely fine. Assuming financing the bike is not an issue, I'd be looking secondhand for £950 instead - you might pick up a useful bike at that price if you know what you are looking for (or could get somebody to do the looking for you).

I've got a 2009 Trek 1.9 and it's been a fantastic bike. It's comfortable, a nice ride looks good (better than the current Treks IMO) and hasn't put a foot wrong in the three years that I've had it. The wheels aren't the lightest, but there's nothing wrong with them and they've stayed perfectly true. I've currently got a stupidly expensive pair of carbon wheels on it, which I bought at about a third of the list price (otherwise I wouldn't have bothered !) but otherwise it's stock. The Ultegra groupset has needed nothing more than routine cleaning and is as crisp as the day I bought it.

I'm going to buy a new frame towards the end of the year and transfer the Ultegra over, at this point I'll find myself a groupset in the sales and use the 1.9 as a winter bike.

My brother has a 2010 Via Nirone and loves it, but he's already thinking of buying a new bike.

Of course, if you are considering Ribble and have a grand - that gets you a carbon frame.........
