edited February 2012 in Road buying advice
so im looking to buy new wheels, im a uni student that only has one bike (tarmac comp 2010) and will be like that for a while till after uni. i was told by my lbs that i need new wheels very soon and have been told that i can replace my aksium for other mavics on finance.

i currently commute, train, casual ride and ride with my club and sportives with one set of wheels 365 days a year

i would also love to race in the very near future as well (or at least give it a try)

my conundrum is this,
- do i buy another set of akiums and a pair of carbone sl's or kysrium sl's or kysrium slr's for summer use
or
- do i buy a middle of the road set like kysrium sl's and use these for everything again
or
-just buy akiums and keep running through them

of course i will be buying both sets with mavics extended warranty for peace of mind and Certini is an amazing lbs so should be ok

please help

My advice would be to buy some winter/commuting wheels, and then another set for best/summer.

If you're riding all year you don't want to be trashing good wheels.

Mavics are okay but there are lots of other good wheels out there too.

Did they elaborate on why you need new wheels? Wheels less than 2 years are not that old unless you are doing some big mileage, etc., IME.

Also, do both wheels need replacing?

You sure they said you need to replace both wheels??
Are both front and rear rims worn to below the manufacturers' minimum reccommended thickness?? Buckled to the point they can't be trued?
  • the reason i was going to mavic is because of the warranty thing they got going on and also i get a slight discount from my lbs, i only currently have a set of aksiums that ive had since i brought the bike in 2010 so they are two years old and are very worn on both rims to the point of not using but stay true,

im going to look tomorrow at options and probs buy a set for summer and wait till i need a winter set at the end of the year
