Building up a new bike and want a silver groupset - crank / front and rear derailer.

They all appear to be black now.

Are the only new ones Athena?

Happy with that, but wondering if any other options - could go more expensive if necesary.

How do i get a link to a photo in here?!

Go for Dura Ace, strip it down and have it bling chromed for bling tastic bling ness.

Too much carbon on Red/Record to do this.

    105 is very shiny.

EDIT - just realised that 5700 has a kind of matt finish :(

Nah, i want mat silver, and i don't really like the look of Dura Ace - too much like a spaceship. Yes, this bike is for poncing around, so i'm picking on looks.Think Athena is still winning. Nice to have above Veloce and i don't think they actually do silver anymore anyway.

Any other brands other than the usual 3?

Ribble was giving away UT Athena chainsets at 50 quid... worth having a look if they still have some... the PT ones are far inferior and way more difficult to service

Yes, worth tracking down older Athena Ultratorque over Powertorque purely from the ease of servicng perspective.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • Unless you want a compact (which is for pussies anyway), the 53x39 Athena chainset UT is still there... 50 quid... I mean... 50 quid... I am tempted to buy it, just to sell it back to you at 150 in three months time when you are hating your PT and regret not following my advice...

Bearings + Chainrings = 70-80 quid... effectively they are paying you 30 quid to take home even the cranks

  • Ultra-torque ehh - might look into that.

That said, this bike is for pootling and looking dandy which might be nicer on a compact. Did the marmot on a compact with a 29 on the back. I wear my pussy badge with pride.

Look, I will move in your area in a couple of months and I might even end up cycling with you... I will always, always point at your overly priced, poorly built compact chainset... I might even refuse to change your bearings as a matter of principle...
That said, I'd fit a compact for the Marmotte...

Have a look out for some 2010 Campag Centaurs - they came in Silver too:

(Though the aluminium levers will be hard to find now).

You can get 2011/12 Veloce in Silver:
