Fitting New Shifters with old Rear Mech
I have just upgraded my gear shifters to Shimano 105 10sp, really like them. I have cabled them up. But I am wondering if the shifters will work with my older 105 rear mech. The rear mech is now 5 years old still works really well. Does anybody know if I have to get a new 2011 rear mech. Bit stuck at the mo.

Don't think so. As far as I know, any shimano mech will work with any set of shimano shifters since mechs aren't speed specific. Easiest way to tell - cable it up and see if it works!0

Thanks, you know what is like when you get one of those bad feelings. I have had a little go and got it to jump up a few cogs, but dose'nt seem to move up further. Front mech is not moving at all. I will just keep fiddling!0

You probably just need to adjust the limiter screws - sounds like it's set too low at the moment. Front mech is probably just a cable tension issue - is it sitting over the small ring? If so, you may just need to pull the cable tighter to get it to move.
I'm in the process of upgrading as well, so I feel your frustration!0 -
The mech/shifters should work fine no problem once set up, but if you are running older brakes then your ratios will be out - it'll still brake but not as well or with as much feel as if it was matching. No biggie though.0

Thanks to you both, I have a cross bike which I use mainly for the road but like to pick up the odd dirt road now and again. The brakes are canti brakes, the large tyres 33's are great for this but are also good for descents as well. Thanks again.0
