Switching from Shimano to Campag

Hi,
Maybe a silly question, but I have a nice spare set of Mavic Ksyriums with Shimano hub and 10 speed Shimano cassette....however my new bike is Campagnolo Centaur right through and the wheels on the bike are Fulcrum Racing 5s.
My question is twofold.
Firstly, is it easy to change the rear Ksyrium to run Campagnolo and what do I need to do? Hub? Cassette? Both?
Second, which are better....almost new Fulcrum Racing 5s or a few years old Ksyriums....both are true?
Thanks
Mark

Depending on what sort of Ksyriums they are, you can get a replacement freehub - or special mavic cassettes for campag groups but to fit a shimano freehub (personally, I'd change the freehub so you can use a proper campag cassette).0
-
Thanks -is swapping the freehub an easy/cheap operation?

No idea sorry - but google should help out with forum posts on this.
Which Mavic Ksyrium version wheels do you have?0 -
Thanks again, they're Ksyrium Equipes....I guess they're 2009s maybe?
I can't seem to get onto the retrobike website to join....0 -
Another option would be to install one of these depending on the cost of a replacement freehub:
http://jtekengineering.com/shiftmate.htm
I use one of these on my bike allowing me to use campag wheels on a shimano equipped bike but they are available for shimano wheels on a campag set up too. It was easy to install and my gears shifts are very smooth. They cost £29.99 from http://www.thetandemshop.com0 -
You can you get them from here brand new:
http://totalcycling.com/a-z/cassettes/cassettes_road_10sp/CSMAVIC.html
So I suppose this way it'll cost 40-50 quid.
Alternatively, if you get the new Kysrium freehub and Campag Veloce/Centaur cassette, it'll be a bit of change out of £100.
It might be cheaper to keep the Racing 5s and sell the Mavics on ebay - though personally, I'd be tempted to go with the new cassette and use the Mavics as winter wheels and keep the Racing 5's for spring.0 -
The shiftmate is good too - though you'll have to unhook the rear mech and remove the shiftmate if you want to use a campag cassette. So the shiftmate is the option to consider if you want to keep the Kysriums and sell the racing 5's.0

Forget that cassette on retrobike - that's a Miche cassette - thought it was a Mavic cassette.0

Hey g00se,
Fantastic advice, thanks very much for all your time.... So just to clarify....
My Wilier is Campag Centaur equipped. The Racing 5s on it will stay on the bike most of the time. The Ksyriums were bought as spare wheels, but they have a Shimano rear cassette. If I buy this Mavic cassette for 50 odd quid and fit that to the Ksyriums, they will work ok with the Campag derailleur etc. I don't need to buy a new freehub? This cassette just replaces the Shimano one currently on the Ksyriums?
Have I got this right? If so, then £50 seems a small price to pay to get a spare set of wheels of Ksyrium standard.....alternatively, as you say, I may just flog them on eBay and buy some Campag equipped wheels
Thanks again, and sorry if my questions are dumb!!!
Cheers

You can get new spacers for cassettes to convert Shmimao o Campag or vice versa - about £20. Have a look on the Highpath Engineering - takes about a week to get a respone.

You can but Campagnolo-spaced, Shimano splined cassettes - save you swapping the freewheel.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

Monty Dog,
Isn't that what's g00se is suggesting with the Mavic cassette from the total cycling website? It fits Shimano splined free hubs but is spaced so it works with the Campagnolo rear set up?
If thats the case, then the £50 cassette seems to be the answer?

Monty is referring to an Ambrosio cassette, spaced for Campag shifters and mech, but splined to fit Shimano hubs. I've got one and it works well.

Otherwise purchase a new freehub for your wheels. They often come up secondhand, pay £20 -£30, and sell you Shiman spec one to recover your cost.0 -
But if I purchase a Campag free hub for the Mavic Ksyriums, I've still got o get a Camag 10 speed cassette as well, right? So, I may as well buy this cassette for £35........although I guess the shifting will be smoother on a proper Campag cassette?
Thanks again,
Mark0
