Freehub play in new wheel. Normal?

Is a little bit of sideways play (1mm approx) on a freehub anything to worry about? The wheel is pretty much new and I haven't fitted a cassetee yet so it's not a spacer issue.
Thanks.

    and the hub is?

is this with in in the frame or out?

    bearing covers lose?

It's a Shimano RS80 wheel, out of the frame, everything appears tight.

then there should not be any "play" in the body as it is bolted to the hub and the bearings are cone and cup.

sideways? allong axle or across it?

Across it. If the wheel was laid flat the cassette would 'wobble' a little from side to side.

there often is a little. also see as the cassette "rocking" as the wheel moves but the cassette is not. Freewheeling.

Nothing to worry about then? Just thought it might be an issue as the freehub on the wheel I'm swapping it with is tight and doesn't rock at all. Worry worry worry :)
  • I would worry... you say it's the freehub, so I will ignore the cassette lockring not done tight enough...

Not familiar with that hub, but I assume once you remove the cone you should get access to the (10 mm?) allen bolt which fixes the freehub in place... am I wrong?

  • Hi most wheels I've owned the freehub doesn't really move but on my mtb it does slightly (deore hub).
I stripped it down and checked the big allen bolt which was tight and carefully repacked the bearings.
Seems that there's just a little play in that model. Its now 3 years old and the play is no worse and I've had no problems.
