Carbon Paint Repair

Hi,
I just bought a secondhand Dolan Hercules SE Frameset and it needs a bit of touching up on the paintwork.
There are a few small stone chips and scratches and one bad scratch on the fork where it is a few millimetres wide and about 4 or 5 inches long.
Should I just touch it up with car paint or a car touch-up pen? I was thinking that the long deep scratch should be built up gradually and then wet & dry sanded to get it smooth.
Has anyone any advise or links to online information on this area?

Thanks...

D

If you want the repair to look good, then the only way is to rub the whole lot down and then respray properly after any minor repairs requiring filler are done. Bit like a car really, touch up paint just leaves a blob of paint instead of a stone chip. Once you start rubbing the area with wet and dry you will create more problems than you solve, especially if the paint is base and lacquer...

If you just want the scratch to be the same colour, then touch up paint will 'colour' it, but it will still show and usually the colour won't quite be the same even if it is the same paint code due to fade etc.

This is why car body shops prepare and paint a whole panel, not just the scratch. Even then you can see the different shade of the paint on that panel in certain light conditions...
