Crossed thread in crank
If you have ever crossed a thread putting a pedal in a crank then there is a solution.
If you have some old pedals strip them down to the axle. Some of the part that the spanner fits on to has to be ground off to allow it to pass through the crank. The allen key axles are okay to use as well. Three groves are then cut across the threaded portion to give a cutting edge. The left or righthand axle is then wound in to the 'back' of the crank and clears the crossed thread.
The grinding of the axle can be difficult but if you have a somebody with engineering experience they should be able to do it with the use of a bench and hand grinder. To do this job with a pair of taps would be very expensive but who knows your LBS may be able to help you.
