Does the Garmin 200 have a slope/gradient function? Or do I need the 500 for that?
ya still gotta crank it

Not while you're out - the display is very basic (which I like). The resultant map on Garmin Connect does show altitude though when you get back & upload.
    There is no secret ingredient...

Even if it did it'd be useless, as it is on the Edge 500. There's way too much uncertainty in vertical position with GPS to get a meaningful realtime slope figure.
    More problems but still living....

The edge 500 altimeter is barometric. so its height data is pretty good.
that doesn't mean it gives realtime slope data that you like, but the reason isn't gps uncertainty.

The 500 gives gradient as a percentage. It's pretty consistent and seems, subjectively , to be fairly accurate. I find it useful as a distraction when climbing steep gradients.
  • Interesting - thanks guys - as you say useful distraction (sometimes! not so good if I'm struggling and its a low gradient!)
