Schoolboys error and...............

……...... the story of our outing today.
(I’ve put place names in just in case anyone recognises it)
Met up with a mate at 10.30, decided to take a route upto Pontypool Park, upto the Grotto, across to the Folly, over and upto the Trig Point, then find a way to thrash back down to home.
The first pull is upto the Grotto from Ponty Park, did this in 2 hits as the bit in the tunnel under the Ski Slope is sooo severe!!! (at least we think so!!)
Over the fences at the top, then and along the lane to get to the Folly. I mentioned to my mate that the hedges had been cut and there was a lot of cuttings on the track (holly and hawthorns!!) He shouted back to me at one point ‘watch out for the thorns’. Sure enough a few hundred yards later I notice his rear tyre is flat.
‘Don’t worry’ says I, ‘I’ve got a spare tube, pump and tyre levers in my back pack’
Schoolboy error, tool kit is not in the pack – it’s on the bench in my shed – I’d not put it back in my pack after servicing the bike during the week!!!! – and my mate wasn’t carrying anything at all – double schoolboy error
So being the hero I decide to bomb home, get the van and pick my mate up after he’s pushed his way back to the Park gates.
So I get back to the Grotto ready to go back down thro’ the woods there (nice downhilly bit) – only to notice that my rear tyre is decidedly spongy and the front is on its way down too!!!
So a quick blast down thro’ the woods and I get as far as the park gates before I’m running on flats and have to push the 2 miles home.
I rescue my mate and we’re home safely.
I get straight on to taking a look at the punctures, 4 in the front and 3 in the back.
These are the most noticeable ones!!
So next time we go out the packs are going to be fully loaded with spares and tool kits.
Just thought I’d share that with you on this dreary Sunday evening
Cheers all

Ok, i'm prepared to be educated on this one please.
Why/how would tubeless tyres stop dirty great big thorns like these causing a puncture :?:Boardman Team FS 2011

Why do you think they wouldn't? They're only thorn prlcks, that's exactly the sort of thing sealant is designed to, erm, seal. You might get a little "hiss" while the sealant finds the holes, but it would seal.
Besides, tubeless tyres tend to be thicker anyway, so the thorns may not even have got through in the first place.0 -
Thanks CWNT.
Please bare with me as I know nothing about tubeless setups cos i'm quite new back into this biking lark.
But i do know about thixotropic sealants for tyres.
So, please can you clarify for me, are tubeless tyres manufactured from a self sealing material, or do you add a sealing fliud to a tubeless tyre?

To re-seal after punctures, you need a fluid in there. There's all sorts of options / combinations of tyres / wheels / fluids / kits.
Get a cup of tea and start googling

bails87 wrote:Or just put tubeless sealant inside a tube. Conversions, IME, just don't work reliably.
Proper rims and tyres seem to be ok though.
^^This^^
Or alternatively add a few grammes of weight and fit PanaRacer Kevlar tyre liners
I've used these, they add a little weight, but as I am 220 LBS and the bike they were fitted to wasn't exactly a lightweight I wasn't over concerned about the "added weight"
However they hold up very well against thorns and other dangers and even prevented a real sharp carpet nail from giving me puncture on my commuter MTB which also has them fitted0 -

as balis mentioned you can run stans in your tubes and it works well but does NOT work on snakes bites(pinch flats if you pinch you end up messy,, and sticky think elephant shooting his load over you and you wont be far wrong..www.bearbackbiking.com

Tubeless tires still get flats, they're not invincible. I was helping a friend repair a tubeless flat and it took three of us to get the tire back on. I can't remember what tire he had but it was a bit@h. I've tried slimed up inner tubes but swiftly changed back as I found they added too much weight and I got a flat anyway. I'm sure some people get the benefits but I didn't so like a dragon, I'm out. Many happy trails!0

are tubeless expensive?Whyte 801
The destination is not as important as the journey!!0 -
depends...
if your bike already has rims for tubless tyres then no.
you can get conversions kits to convert normal rims with mixed results (some rims and tyres work better than other) for not much money tubeless kit (rimstips valves and sealant around £45-£50) you may need new tyres to so factor that in,,
there is a cheaper way of doing it ghettto style using bmx innertubes as a rimstrip, but again mixed results depending on rims and tyres.
best way is the most expensive way is getting propper tubless rims and tyres this should work but is not cheap..
