Fragile Carbon
So.
Got my new frame to replace a cracked fork steerer a approx three months back. Front changing not been working to well and finally got around to taking a proper look and giving the thing a proper clean. So paint or crack? Safe or not.

The mech hanger is moving which is why it doesnt work very well and the paint has cracked. The hanger hasnt been put on properly. You need to have the frame replaced if it cant be fixed.Pegoretti

It's paint/lacquer. I had a larger crack in a similar area on my TT bike. I took it to a carbon frame repairer who said it's because the paint in that area is usually too thick and prone to cracking. If it was the carbon it's more likely the crack will run virtically up that tube. The paint has cracked on yours because of the loading and flexing caused by changing gear.Norfolk, who nicked all the hills?

Currently waiting for response from manufacturer... Even if it's only cracked paint It doesn't look the best. I guess at least by letting them know they can choose what to do and if it does compltely fail I can argue I told them in the warranty period. Fingers crossed I'll get something sorted.0

And per WeightWeenies white paint is generally thicker to get better colour.
I'm with the others that think the tube is flexing causing the paint to crack.0 -
I think you've been very good about this. I personally would refuse to use the bike and demand exchange or refund. If that happens two years later fair enough but not that soon. They can't argue with you so they ought to sort something. Even a full respray if the frame is sound.
I doubt I would be so calm about it but mind you I'll argue over 50p given the chance!0 -
Calm becuase I trust that it will get sorted. I've previously had two MTB's fixed that had a failed swing arm in the same place. One was outside warranty and the new parts were beefed up in the place where they cracked. The last road bike was crashed and they could have refused warranty but they did not. I'm not worried about the old scratch or cosmetic damage. It happens. I also know that it's not about to be a catistrophic failure if it is carbon. Something will get sorted.0

Yes interesting about it being white paint as mine was white in that area as well!Norfolk, who nicked all the hills?
