Seized Speedplay Pedal

Last night my right hand speedplay pedal seized up on me during training, I managed to loosen it off enough to be able to ride home but in the last km or so it completely froze and now has no spin on it. This is the body of it.
Is it a send to morgue job or can it be resurrected?
Its a cromo zero

Have you been greasing them?
Bearings are available at places like Wiggle http://www.wiggle.co.uk/speedplay-zero- ... aring-set/
I plan to get a Speedplay gun when I am in the US with work the week after next. Depending on where you are in London you could come and borrow. I am just down the A13.0 -
brett if you PM me or email me when you know how much they are id even be tempted to get you to buy me one (obviously id pay for it)...
because they are ludicrously expensive over here
and they were greased about 3 or 4 months ago. was on my list of jobs to do this weekend... now im going to have to disassemble and work out whats gone wrong and see whether hope its the cartridge bearings that have gone rather than the needle bearings i assume?BMC TM01 - FCN 0

A syringe works just as well as a grease gun & is a lot cheaper ;-)0
-
i dont have any syringes either. i'll see what i can find in my workshop on sunday. as im going to grease my stainless steel ones to make sure they dont go the same way...BMC TM01 - FCN 0

You can get plastic syringes from the chemist for pennies.0
-
What grease would you use then. Normal grease, or something like Moly grease?0
-
Speedplay would tell you to use their grease of course! I've heard of peiople using marine grease but I've always used Park Polylube 1000 but that's cause that's the one I already had (for all ohter jobs on my bike) not because I chose it sepecifically for this one. That said it seems to work fine and when it runs out I will buy more.0

^ that plenty of vids on youtube showing this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_x1hst38NpA
Another top tip I found that wrapping a bit of PTFE plumbers tape around the end of the syringe gives a tighter seal & prevents the grease from backflowing during injection.
Cheap as chips in total.0 -

ive been given a link with instructions on how to completely dismantle and rebuild with the bearing sizes and stuff...

No need to buy the ridiculously expensive Speedplay grease gun. Get something such as this http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_255216 Available at most auto supply stores but just make sure the kit includes a sharp tip to fit the pedal grease port (most kits do). Almost any grease will do. The super special Speedplay stuff isn't that special or necessary. I use cheap marine grease which will generally hold up in wet conditions a little better. You kind of have to sort out your own lubing schedule. If you find that when you inject new grease, the old grease that gets pushed out is either a black gooey spoodge or non-existent then you need to grease more frequently.0

i'll do some research on grease guns then. in the short term i'll use the one i can snaffle away at work.
this one has specific reviews saying it is suitable for speedplays

£2.10 - job done! I am sure I got mine cheaper from Tesco's pharmacy though.0 -
I got the Speedplay gun with grease at a bargain price. I think I read somewhere that it is marine grease. If the pedals spin too easily, they need grease. Contador's spin very easily but they have probably been modified with ceramic bearings and only use oil.Pegoretti

so i attempted to take my pedals apart yesterday. rounded the bolt off, so i weighed up the price of new cleats + bearings and it wasnt much more for a brand new pair of pedals. so i bought a new pair.
i also bought:

http://www.evanscycles.com/products/fin ... z-ec005911
to keep my other (stainless steel) pair of speedplays in good nick and the new pair when i get them delivered.
When greasing them should the grease push out the dust cap slightly or splurge out on the spindle?BMC TM01 - FCN 0

Grease should come out onto the spindle. If it is coming back out of the dust cap then, the grease is not going where it should.0

good news, i bought the wrong grease then. it must be too thick.
so now i need to un-grease my pedal and get some new grease...
anyone got any suggestions for cheap but correct grease?BMC TM01 - FCN 0

Taken direct from the speedplay website http://www.speedplay.com/index.cfm?fuse ... e.zerofaqs
What type of grease do you recommend for the bearings?
A synthetic, waterproof grease such as marine wheel-bearing grease works best. Speedplay uses waterproof bearing grease in its factory. Do not use thin viscosity grease, spray lubes, oil, or dry-type (PTFE) lubricants on pedal bearings or damage may result. Speedplay Grease guns and recommended grease are available at your local Speedplay dealer or call us at 1-800-468-6694 to order.
I am having difficulty injecting grease into my pedals through the grease port. What should I do?
Apply pressure to the grease gun when inserting the injector tip into the grease port. Be sure to inject the grease very, very slowly. Turning the pedal body on the spindle while injecting grease will help the grease make its way through the bearings and out the spindle side of the pedal body. When fresh grease comes out after the old grease, put the screw back in, wipe off the excess grease and you are done.
That should help you out.0 -
This would do http://compare.ebay.co.uk/like/13047413 ... adtype=pla
Or this http://www.versatilemarine.co.uk/acatal ... -1752.html
This would also do but, as it is not marine grade it will be less waterproof & would probably need applying more often

Bike shop prices for grease suitable for pedals are the biggest marketing rip off going ;-)0 -

One of my dust caps is a wee bit damaged and I have to try to seal it as I squeeze the grease in so it goes through - it's tricky but doable if I just jam the syringe tip in and cover the edge of the dust cap with finger. Yes I know I could buy a new dust cap but trying deseperately to save money for new shoes, wheels, tyres etc etc (not to mention food for the kids!!)0

If you use the stuff that I posted earlier it will work fine, push the old grease out the spindle and will work no problems as it has done for the 2 years that I've used the pedals for with no problems.Bianchi. There are no alternatives only compromises!
