HELP - fitting new wheels

Hi - I'm pretty new on the forum, but hoping someone can help me!

I reckon this is probably something small and idiotic - however, I have just got a new set of Shimano RS80 wheels. I was fitting my new cassette and realised that the hubs are blocked - what I mean is that where the quick release axels (or indeed lock ring tool) fits is blocked with what looks like black plastic. I think they were part of the black plastic protectors that are fitted to protect the wheels when packed.

I have no idea how to remove this - any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Just Pull the mofos out, there just there for protection, when the wheels are being shipped, and to stop the axles cutting through the box.

    Yank hard
  • Ah - I didn't explain properly - so I did yank them off, but it looks like the bits that went into the shaft broke off when I did - so essentially there is nothing protruding from the axle hole at all!

Maybe try to push it out with a piece of rod, or maybe your Q/R.

  • I think that maybe the only option - however I don't know how hard I can push - I spoke to Wiggle (as I got them from them) and they said some WD40 may help push them out.

One thing I don't know is if the axle slot is the same diameter all the way through, or do they widen out in the middle - I would hope they are the consistent all the way through, otherwise one of the bits will end up lost inside the hub - which would be very very annoying!

Anyone know what the inside of the bug looks like?

If they are the same as my humble RS10s, the axle is just a simple tube with a constant internal diameter, so your fears are groundless.

I'd be tempted to drill a small pilot hole in the plastic bit, thread a self tapping screw in there and use that to pull it out
  • that maybe a very good idea actually, I would prefer not to use any force if I can avoid it!

Thanks for the info regarding the hub - verty appreciated.
  • By chance i actually unpacked my RS80 C50 this afternoon, found it was best to unscrew them.
  • HAHA - that made me laugh :D

So - I have advice from bike shops and others - thinking the best maybe to slightly melt them with a match and push em through....

If they were originally screwed in and you have snapped them off pulling them out, try using 'easy-outs' - a left handed thread extractor. You drill a suitable size hole, then screw the easy out in left handed, which is tapered s it tightens in the hole as you screw, eventually becoming tight enough to start turning the wedged bit of plastic within the axle.

  • Managed it this morning, brute force with a lock ring tool did it (easier to control and exert force than with a longer QR skewer) - pushed one of them through and then popped them through with a skewer once it could be inserted.

    Thanks!
