Cervelo S1/S2 Frameset Owners? Sizing Help!

Looking to buy a Cervelo S1 Frameset but I am not going to get a chance to ride one to check the size/feel.

I want to change my frame as while I love my Lemond Reno (see sig) its too upright and relaxed. All my weight seems to be hanging off the back which doesn't inspire confidence descending or going around corners at speed. The front end often feels like its going to let go, and with a 100mm stem I feel a little bit "reachy". I am hoping that being slightly lower with a less laid back seat tube my weight will be distributed a bit better (leaning on the bars more) helping the above out.

Im 6ft 2" with a 33" inseam
Weight 70 kg

I was thinking a 58cm but this is the same size as the Lemond's Top tube centre to centre.

Will going from a Sportive/relaxed frame to a racier frame, help the above?
Will a 58cm be the right size?
Am I looking for an excuse to buy a new frameset because my bike handling skills are shocking?

    Mate,
Would say that a 58 is about right for ur size
It has a 58cm tt I believe (please check the cervelo website for details)
I am 6ft and a bit and have recently bought a 56cm s2, the geom of which is good for me when combined with optimal seat height and stem length (have not build it yet-that's for this week!!) but I have found with 58cm a bit to long In the tt for me, however...........
It all depends on your dimensions and ideally u should find a cervelo dealer near you to get a feel for the bike if you can. I am sure other (taller) members will be able to give u some more advice.

You may want to consider a prof bike fit though to give u ideal measurements, check out cadence sport and do a search on here, nothing but good feedback. I have not been yet, but it is on my list for the new year. Good luck, cervelo are a pedigree bike!!!

Im 6ft dead, ride 54 with longer stem, 56 too big for me, so Id guess 56, so there you go, someone says 58 another says 56. Mind you, thats gut reaction, go and ride it or get a bike fit!

Depends very much on your body shape, long legs or long torso?

If you are Richmond (london) then get down to Sigma sports and try a couple on the turbo or better still get measured up. (I suspect you are Richmond, Yorks).

FWIW I am 6feet and ride a 56cm with a 120mm stem, longer torso and shorter legs (32inch inseam)

About 6ft 1 and got a 56cm S1 - but I use this as my triathlon/road bike, so happy to have a slightly smaller frame than usual. Usually ride 58cm frames.

    Thanks for all the feedback.

@Nochekmate Whats your inseam? Is there much seat post left?

I am in Surrey so I will head over to Sigma Sport on Thursday to see if I can sit on one to see how it feels. It sounds like its not clear cut one or the other..

Bit more background on mine... Im 2 inches shorter than you, and when I used to have a 56cm it was too big really, I had a 100mm stem (too short really for a nike of that size and looked it too) and had to get a new lower stack top bit for the headset (allowed bars another 8-9mm lower than the one that came with the bike) and put the stem right down on top of that.

Im long torso, 31.5 inseam. Seatpost-wise it looked fine.

I made a mistake buying that size, wont make a mistake like that again. Just saying in case, cos you could get a 58 and wish you'd got a 56.

I would seriously go and sit on some. My perfect size would be a 55cm Cervelo, but they dont make one, so Im now on a 54 with a long stem. Next bike wont be a Cervelo unless they change the geometry so there's a perfect size for me... oh, and certainly wont be if they turn out disgusting looking things like that new S5 !!!

33 inch inner leg and here's a pic of my S1 (apologies for indoor kitchen shot). Seatpost has more scope if I needed it but saddle/bar drop might be a problem - 48 yrs old and although reasonably flexible it seems, not wanting to push it too much. Saddle height is approx 78cm from centre of BB to top of saddle.

The S1 is not my bike for long distance riding (got a Trek 6.9 Madone & Colnago C40 both of which are more forgiving bikes), but I do like the S1 for its versatility (I intend resurrecting my triathlon 'career' on this bike in summer '12). I bought the frameset off here for £400 and as I say ideally I'd prefer the 58 I think, but at that price I've put together a cheap bike, which sizewise will serve me well for TT/Tri.

@nochekmate ...would you really want to have higher bars and longer reach then?? I take it you must want both of those to want a 58??? ...if it was just more reach then you'd just use a longer stem?? That one looks about 11cm? ...can see your fork was cut off short though on that one, so no 'going up' without a flipped stem.

    Just interested.

I'm just under 6'2", I had a 58cm S2, it was perfect. I now have a 58cm R3, it too is perfect. I use(d) them with a 120 stem and Deda RHM bars which only have about 75mm reach.

    S2OCP.jpg

Although I couldn't get far back enough on the S2, my BB centre to saddle tip setback is 12.5cm. I had to have the saddle a little higher to compensate so not ideal. My R3 has a setback post so its bob on.
The bars on the S2 in this shot were FSA, slightly too long in the reach (I find a 120 stem perfect for handling.)

Unfortunately not a sat down pic but here's one of me riding it-

If you're using these bikes as road-only machines you'll be fine. However, if you want to then get a good TT position you might struggle unless you've got particularly long legs and short torso - the stack height is just too high for people like me. That's why I'm going down a similar route for my next bike, but one that started out as a pure TT bike and is now being marketed as "aero road", that being the Moda Sharp (ok I might treat myself to an Interval with Carbon 58's if I decide to put my aero wheels up for sale). This bike has a longer top tube and a shorter head tube than the Cervelo so will likely suit my needs better. Then I can always raise the bars for road riding if ever I decide to use it on a sportive but, unlike the Cervelo S-series bikes, I can at least get long and low enough for TT use.

Good luck with the fitting though, if it works out for you then you'll love it :D

    Thanks for all the help.

Managed to sit on a 58cm in Sigma Sport and it felt right. I subsequently picked one up on eBay in great condition for just over £500.00.

    Very happy indeed :D

However, while I checked the frame over for any signs of failure I didn't notice the missing cable stopper when I collected it

Does anyone know where to source the part?

Given the same thing is used on the s2 and I dare say the current models I'm sure you'll find one no problems. Amazing that the s1 still fetch top dollar.

    I have a 56, 120mm stem - 6,1.
