Shoe Buying Advice: Lake CX170 vs CX236 vs ??

I've been riding with MTB shoes/SPD's since I got my bike last August, mainly because I already had them so it prevented me from having to spend any "bike" money on accessories. Anyway, I've been given some Wiggle vouchers for my birthday and I'm looking to get some road shoes (already got pedals).

I was looking to get Specialized BG Comp (or Expert), but obviously, Wiggle don't stock them and I've been taken by the Lake shoes. That said, the reviews on here say that the CX170 is a good entry-level race shoe (I'm looking to start racing this season), whereas the 236 is too flexible for racing - can anyone comment, or is that just relative to their respective costs? I find it hard to believe that a carbon sole can be more flexible than a composite...

Alternatively, does anyone have any alternative suggestions? Shimano R106 was mentioned, but is discontinued at Wiggle. I've got a little over £100 in vouchers to spend, but don't mind adding a *bit* extra if there's something particularly worthwhile. I'd like to have something by next weekend, when I'm having a bike fit done.

Undoubtedly the best shoe will be the one that fits your feet best. I've tried a few shoes and sent a lot of them back because they just didn't fit well.

If you can I'd buy 2 or three pairs, keep the best one and send the others back.

  • I've had the Lake 236's. They were the 2nd pair of Lake's that I've owned. They are very well made shoes for the price. My only complaint was relative to the Spesh S-Works shoes that I own now, is that the Lake's were a bit bulky.

On the whole, I think they fit very well along with being very well made.

I was looking at the 236 but that review on here put me off. Ended up with some s-works BG shoes on offer at my LBS. 30% discount took them to £140.

Some guys ride them at my club and the mesh area has gone all grey and dirty making them look a bit tatty.
