Repairing neoprene overshoes

Hi,

I've managed to make a small tear in some pretty new neoprene overshoes on the toe area. I'm just wondering if it there's a an easy way to repair them? I was thinking of a wetsuite repair kit or perhaps more simply a small piece of electrical tape.

Anyone tried this? Other suggestions?

Cheers,
Steve

I don't think electrical tape will last very long to be honest.
    Hope you get it sorted.

you can get some wetsuit repair tape - it irons on. I'm sure you'll find a stockist if you look at the windsurf places etc

  • That could be the answer.

Crosses fingers & hopes for the best " Its sticks very well to Nylon covered Neoprene. It does not stick to smoothskin neoprene nor finemesh neoprene. "

It is however cheaper than specific Neoprene glue so, you need to pay your money & take your choice unless a materials scientist can chime in here?
  • Stitch them with some kind of fishing nylon wire

Get the proper cement and some reinforcing tape if it's a high wear area - if you try and use fishing line you'll probably just cut through the fabric. Repaired enough wetsuits in my time to know what works.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • Thing is, in my experience these overshoes never last very long, so it's pointless to buy expensive ones and try to fix them... get the cheap ones and dispose of them when they're gone

I've superglued an inner tube patch on in the past. It looks a bit of an eyesore but seems to work. Obviously the area is no longer stretchy, so it isn’t a perfect solution.

Thanks for the replies - I think I'll try the wetsuite repair tape.

Also, it's not an issue of wear on the shoes at all, it's to do with the fact that the protective cap on the end of one of the front mudguard 'supports' came off and I caught the overshoe on the exposed metal in the dark.

    Black Witch:

Or a more thrifty approach - I repaired my wetsuit last year with the glue from a Tesco Value puncture repair kit. Still going strong......

Just a quick follow up on this - I used the Black Witch from CRC. Worked a treat and still holding strong now :)

See that you carried out your repair.

As a general rule though and having used various overshoes incl. neoprene which claim to be waterproof I have not come across any that are.

So I wouldn't recommed others wasting time or money sourcing waterproof materials to do a repair.

Keep torn ones for cold, dry days.

    And get a new pair.
