Cassette compatability

I have a set of Fulcrum 7 wheels currently fitted to my Sora/Tiagra equipped Specialized Allez (2007). I intend to use these wheels when I build my new bike this year. While deciding on components I had been limiting myself to Shimano or SRAM groupsets as I didn't think a Campagnolo cassette would fit a Shimano configured wheel. However, I have read somewhere that Fulcrum wheels will accept either. Is this correct? I'm sure when I bought them I had to specify Shimano or Campagnolo so it doesn't sound right.
Secondly, how different are the cassettes from SRAM, Shimano, Campag? Could you fit a 10speed SRAM cassette onto a Shimano wheel if everything else was Campagnolo for instance, assuming everything was 10 speed. I appreciate that the indexing is critical but surely they must all be deisgned to occupy a finite amount of room on the hub.

Thanks for any advice.

  • Fulcrum wheels will accept either if you purchase the Campagnolo freehub body... Campagnolo cassettes will not go on a Shimano/SRAM freehub.
Not sure about the price of a freehub or its availability but budget an extra £ 50 or so if you want to run on Campagnolo.

Campagnolo 10 speed with Shimano/SRAM cassette will be trouble, if it was 9 it would be a different story

Thanks for that. I was considering Campagnolo for a bit but it sounds like I will cause myself some grief in the long run. Anyway, it's academic now, I took the plunge today and ordered a SRAM Rival groupset.

Cheers for taking the time to reply.
